Meet the Neurosurgery Team

Dr Labuschagne

Our Neurosurgery Department provides specialist care for children with complex neurological conditions, combining advanced surgical expertise with a warm, child- and family-centred approach. We work closely with referring clinicians to support each child from diagnosis through treatment and long-term follow-up.

Dr Labuschagne completed his undergraduate degree at the University of the Witwatersrand and his neurosurgical specialist training at the University of the Free State (M.Med Cum Laude, 2006). His special interests include craniofacial surgery, neuro-oncology and hydrocephalus, with research focused on paediatric tumour resection (including 5-ALA), brainstem glioma pathology, and vagus nerve stimulation therapy in children.

The Neurosurgery Department

Dr Labuschagne works alongside consultant neurosurgeon Dr Denis Mutyaba, supported by rotating neurosurgeons and trainees from the University of the Witwatersrand circuit, as well as a dedicated team of medical officers at NMCH. Many neurosurgical patients are also co-managed with paediatricians to ensure holistic care—addressing both the surgical condition and the child’s broader medical needs.

Because children require a different clinical approach, our facilities, equipment and procedures are designed specifically for paediatric care. We also understand the emotional side of treatment—helping children and families feel informed, supported and reassured. For long-term neurological conditions, continuity matters, so we aim to build lasting relationships between families and the same clinical team over time.
