Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital is a specialist paediatric referral hospital in Johannesburg, created from Madiba’s vision of a world-class children’s hospital accessible to every child in need. We treat appropriately referred children up to the age of 16, regardless of socio-economic background, serving Gauteng, South Africa and the wider SADC region. Our state-of-the-art 200-bed facility is welcoming and child-friendly, with warm reception areas, family lounges, gardens and play spaces designed to support children and their families through care. Led by dedicated specialists, medical staff and volunteers, we provide a wide range of inpatient and outpatient clinical and support services—helping critically ill children get the best possible chance to live and thrive.

Your gift reaches children who need it most
Born from Madiba’s commitment to children, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund began in 1995 and went on to launch Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital as a flagship initiative in 2005. In 2009, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust was established to lead the project and raise the R1 billion needed to build, equip and staff Gauteng’s first dedicated specialist paediatric hospital. After years of research, advocacy and collaboration across South Africa and the SADC region, construction began in April 2014, the hospital was officially launched in December 2016, and we welcomed our first patients in June 2017.
